Pool Cover Planning Guide
Cover guides stay on new-construction and renovation integration. Repair, fabric replacement, and motor troubleshooting belong on a dedicated cover-service site.
This hub is about integrating a cover while the pool is being designed or remodeled, before there is any cover to look at. Track type, vault or bench geometry, drainage, and power or hydraulic reservations have to be drawn before the shell is placed. They are cheap exactly once.
Why covers are a planning topic
An automatic cover is structural geometry, not an accessory. The fabric rolls onto a drum in a vault or bench. The tracks run in or under the coping. The vault needs a drain that goes somewhere real. The drive needs power or hydraulic lines with a conduit path. Those items are embedded at the steel-and-shell stage of the construction sequence. Decided early, a cover is a clean line item. Decided late, it is demolition.

What a cover buys
Evaporation is the largest heat and water loss from an open pool. A cover shrinks heater duty, cuts makeup water, and keeps debris out. The effect is largest in hot, dry, windy climates, which is why pool design for hot climates treats a cover as the first decision to lock on that page. Covers also change daily safety behavior. Safety ratings belong to specific tested products. Verify any claim against the actual model’s documentation, not the category’s reputation.
Geometry decides difficulty
A true rectangle lets tracks run parallel along both sides and keeps the system simple. Freeform shapes need a track wider than the water at every point, which grows cost and visual weight. A flush spa inside the pool’s rectangle can share the pool’s cover. A raised spa breaks the cover plane and needs its own. The trade-offs are in pool and spa combinations. If a cover matters to you, let it influence the shape while the shape is still free.
Getting it onto the drawings
